Description

On a recent hike through the Everglades I became fascinated with the swamp lilies that grow there. To me they looked like little white ghosts haunting the murky waters. Somehow this got me thinking about the temple to Dionysos Limnaios in a marsh on the outskirts of ancient Athens. The god was celebrated during the festival of Anthesteria, when the souls of the Dead returned upon the first flowering of early spring. Here I've reimagined Dionysos, or perhaps his priest, as a magician of the swamps, harvesting ghostly flowers for a secret nocturnal rite.
