A scene from The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R Tolkien. In Moria, while the rest of the Fellowship sleeps, a sleepless Gandalf sits on watch. This image was a alternate idea of portrait of Gandalf I did a number of years ago. I made a drawing of it a few years ago, and decided to paint it earlier this year. It depicts what happened after the passage above, after Pippin nodded off. The anxious Wizard stares into the ominous guardroom well, which foreshadows the abyss into which he will soon fall, the rusty chains evoking the flaming whips of the Balrog that will drag him down.
