Description

PHANUEL AND THE CALADRIUS
When the prophet Enoch hears the voices of four archangels standing in the presence of God, he identifies the first three as Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. He then says:
“And the fourth, who is in charge of repentance, and hope of those who will inherit eternal life, is Phanuel. And the fourth voice I heard driving away the Satans and not allowing them to come in front of the Lord of Spirits to accuse those who dwell on the earth.”

Phanuel the Arc summons the Caladrius. Because of the bird’s godlike abilities, the Caladrius was identified as a Christ figure in the medieval bestiary. Looking away from the dying and toward those he will heal represent Christ looking toward and saving the Gentiles; consuming the sick’s illness and satans represented Christ’s salvation of humanity; and the caladrius’s flight to the sun where the satans and disease are incinerated.
