Angel Dominguez
Ángel Domínguez (1953–2021) was a Spanish illustrator recognized as one of the finest of his generation. From 1971 until his untimely death, Ángel’s luminous art reflected both technical brilliance and his generous heart. Often compared to Golden Age masters Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, he created timeless images filled with warmth, whimsy, and narrative depth.
Ángel’s nature scenes and literary interpretations radiate tenderness. Animals and characters are rendered with equal parts emotion, reverence, and a sense of humor. Many of his personal projects were not for publication, but sprang from his love of mythic storytelling and imagery.
With publications spanning six decades, Ángel is particularly known for bringing renewed vitality and atmosphere to classics such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Wind in the Willows, A Christmas Carol, Treasure Island, and The Jungle Book, which earned him the CCEI Award in Spain for best illustrated book. His originals are in private collections across the globe.
Curiosity was Ángel’s constant companion. “I want to carry with me every inspiration that I find. Always I carry a little sketchbook with me, and when a good idea comes, I draw it… and after, I put it in larger sketchbooks, which often have better drawings than in the same published books!”
At home each evening, he turned to books from his personal collection illustrated by Rackham or Dulac — sometimes studying them with a magnifying glass, other times losing himself in the awe that first inspired him as a child. Through lifelong humility and dedication, he absorbed their lessons while cultivating a voice entirely his own — and became a master of narrative illustration in his own right.
