'Hawkmoon Defends Castle Brass', from 'The Jewel in the Skull'; one of twelve of Matthews' Michael Moorcock designs commissioned as full-size posters by Big O Posters in 1976. The collection was also published in the calendar 'Wizardry and Wild Romance'.

Matthews depicts Duke Dorian Hawkmoon von Köln, baring the Black Jewel in his skull, as he confronts Astrovak Mikosevaar, one of the principal figures in King Huon's army of the Dark Empire of Granbretan. While Hawkmoon defends Castle Brass from the grotesque mask-wearing warriors on the ground, the scarlet flamingos of the Kamarg do battle in the air with the undying ruler's ornithopters."
