Deep in the forest is a great tree. At the roots of the tree is a well, the Well of Memory. Three Norns (goddesses of fate) take council at the well and nourish the World Tree. The well rejuvenates, and whoever bathes in its water, leaves it as a being of bright shining light. The Norns are shapeshifters and can transform themselves into swans and then back again into human form.
