Description

Oils, graphite, inks on board, 6/96, 20 x 29 inches, signed lower left. This novel was originally going to be called Dragonheart, but a movie came out with that name and the publisher decided to change it. It’s the first novel of The Crown of Stars Series by Kate Elliot, who, it turns out, was a friend of mine and another sword and shield fighter when we were in the Society for Creative Anachronism. I had fun recreating a map of constellations, and the knight was inspired by the designs of Edwardian artist Walter Crane. As for medieval fighting, I wasn’t any good, but I still have my shield, on which I painted a tattooed blue toad on it, holding a brush and a sword.
