Acrylics, gold gouache, ink on board, 2/98, 18 x 27 inches, signed left of mother & child. The second book in the trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon. Darian and Kuari his bond bird lead the barbarians to safety. The theme I got from the books was about building bridges to the many different cultures and peoples, and so the design has a bridge shaped frame/background. My son and I modeled for the mother and child on the left of the barbarian tribe. I think this is the only time I put a recognizable version of the two of us on a cover. For the first book I used some model in a one-page ad for Darian, foolishly thinking that this was going to be a standalone book. So, I was a bit pressed to make two more versions of this Darian for books two and three.
