I had the art photographed before I turned in the art, and then discovered that the author had meant her heroes to be clean shaven. Because of the low technology feel of the book, I kind of assumed a late dark ages fashion. So I took back the art work, painted it over, but didn’t get it re-photographed. You have to imagine them sans beards. The weird thing is I’ve found some printings of the books with beards and some without. I tried something different with the granite: I used a speckled spray paint for the shield to give it what I hoped would be a granite texture. It came out fine. But what I really loved was getting to do an attack of fireships.
