MATTHEW STEWART is a freelance illustrator and painter. In his work, Matt strives to bring a classical realism to his imaginative and fantastic subjects. Matt’s paintings are done in the traditional medium of oils. Images are built through an intensive process of sketching, reference gathering, and study from life. After graduating with a BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design in 1999, Matt has worked in the gaming and publishing fields, including such clients as Wizards of the Coast, Fantasy Flight Games, Blizzard Entertainment, The Easton Press, and Tor Books. Matt has illustrated over 100 Magic the Gathering cards, and his work has appeared regularly in Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art volumes. In 2010, Matt won two Chesley awards. One for the Best Hardback Book Cover for his painting Valley of Shadows, and another for Best Product Illustration for The Battle Under the Mountain IX Commission painting, which was used as the catalogue cover for IX 2. It was on the advice of his father that Matt picked up The Hobbit in grade school, and his interest in fantasy was sparked. Very much still an avid Tolkien reader, Matt illustrates Middle Earth subjects for his own pleasure in between commercial commissions. Matt lives in Runnemede, N.J. along with his wife Gina, who is also an artist.
